Seamless pipes and tubes (SMLS)
Ferrostaal Piping Supply is a leading international supplier of seamless pipes and tubes of all grades and dimensions with more than 60 years of product and business expertise. In our warehouse, we stock seamless pipes up to 24'' in the high and low-temperature range. The pipes are according to ASTM and API in the complete schedule series. Thick wall XXS is not missing in our warehouse. In addition we keep seamless pipes for structural application with high yield strength up to 1.000 ksi on stock. Through our international network, we can also supply you from stock or new production for example with pipes according ASTM A 312, high temp austenitic pipes acc. ASTM B 407, or nickel alloys in acc. to ASTM B165 or B622.
Seamless pipe manufacturing process
Steel pipes and tubes can be manufactured in different methods, the main methods are electric resistance welding (ERW), fusion welding (EFW), double submerged arc welding (DSAW) and seamless pipe manufacturing (SMLS). The seamless pipe manufacturing process starts with the transformation of raw materials into steel bars. In different types of rolling mills steel bars are formed into a solid round shape, called billet, which is heated and pushed or pulled over a piercing rod producing a hollow tube or shell. Due to the heating production process seamless pipes are normalized and should have a consistent steel pattern throughout its range.
Seamless pipe sizes and dimensions
Seamless pipes are finished in accordance with customer needs regarding dimensional and wall thickness specifications as well as heat treatment for more demanding applications. In general a seamless pipe is manufactured in sizes from 1/8” to 24” according to current standards API, ASTM, and ASME. Seamless tubing is available for different materials such as carbon steel, stainless steel and alloy steel. If required for special projects we can also supply seamless pipes for bigger sizes starting from outside diameter 26” up to 48”.
SMLS pipes for various industries
Seamless tubes are mostly used to transport high pressure gas or fluid within the oil & gas, petrochemical, chemical and power industries. As the manufacturing process does not include any welding, seamless pipes are perceived to be more non-corroding and to withstand higher operating pressure and mechanical stress than welded steel pipes (according to ASME). Despite higher initial costs seamless pipes are more cost-effective when taking potential of defects, replacement and comprehensive tests for welded pipes into consideration.
